The Hillwood High School Band
Weekly News

September 24, 2009

This Week's News

  • October Parking Calendar Delayed.  Due to an event addition at the Sommet Center, the October calendar that was scheduled to be released Tuesday (yesterday) was delayed.  Volunteers are asked to verify their volunteer times as soon as possible AFTER SEEING THE NEW CALENDAR with call times. Please look for the calendar late Thursday or Friday.

  • Community Pep Rally Friday, Sept. 25. The band has been asked to perform at a Hillwood Neighborhood Community pep rally Friday before the game. Students should be in the Rehearsal Hall by 5:00 PM dressed in full uniform.  The students will then march to the Hillwood Presbyterian Church (across the street from Hillwood High School on Hickory Valley Road for the pep rally.  The students will then head back to the rehearsal hall to get ready for the game.  Front ensemble members will remain at the band hall to assemble instruments for loading, etc.

  • Football Game vs. Stratford.  Band members will be wearing FULL Dress Uniforms for the game. We will be providing our famous hospitality for the Stratford band, staff, and chaperones during the 3rd quarter.  Hillwood has become well known for its generous hospitality. This goes beyond providing snacks for the visiting band, it includes the presentation of the light snack buffet, the respect shown to the other band, and the cordial conversation during the break.

We will be serving cookies not used for last week's game, so nothing additional is needed.

  • Two Competitions at Columbia Saturday, Sept. 26. This will be a VERY long day with two competitions. An abbreviated schedule is included below and the full gig sheet is attached.

Please make sure your band member is dressed in his/her FIELD UNIFORM and ON THE FIELD no later than 8:00 AM Saturday morning.  This means band members may need to arrive by 7:30 AM to gather their things.  The rehearsal hall will open at 7:15 AM.

  • Now Accepted: Visa, MasterCard, Discover, AMEX, and PayPal. Band fees can now be paid by using a variety of methods through PayPal. Don't forget donations! We have a place for that now, too. Visit the HHS Band website at http://www.hillwoodband.com/ to see (and use) them.

Additional Comments

Hello!

Saturday will be a VERY long day.  Make sure your band student has plenty of snacks and money.  If you are attending, make sure you have enough money to pay for your entry to the contest.

For our new parents, uniform "halves" consist of the black bib pants, the Hillwood High School Band issued black under armor shirt, black socks (at least mid-calf), and black band marching shoes.  Jackets are left in the uniform bags and carried separately.

There are usually vendor kiosks at competitions where band members can purchase memorabilia.  It is not required to purchase these items, but we want to make sure you child has enough money for food.

Which reminds me . please, please, please send enough money for food and snacks, or send a lunch kit with your student.  We have has students in the past show up for all day events with nothing to eat or drink.  Of course we don't let them starve, but it does make other parents and band members uncomfortable.

Saturday will be full of activity.  If you are available to help, come on by.  Before and after we do have to load and unload the equipment truck, clean up after ourselves in the busses and school, and just put things away.  At the competition we'll have to unload and set out the equipment so that it is easy for the band members to get to their things.

As there is "concert etiquette" for concert performances in the Spring time, there is "marching band etiquette" during marching season.  This time is pretty regimented.  When your child is in line in full uniform, you should not approach them unless you are assisting with official band business.  When the band members are walking in line, you should not expect to be allowed to "break ranks."  (This means passing through while they are walking by.)

We have been working diligently on our Hillwood reputation for several years now and parents AND students are expected to act appropriately when representing the Hillwood High School Band.

Hope you can come see the kids compete at Columbia Saturday!

Cindy F
