This Week's News
-
Booster meeting tomorrow night at 6:30 in the rehearsal hall. All parents are, by default, members of the HHS Band Booster. Please join us to learn about the upcoming marching season and next year's (tentative) calendar.
-
It's time to get physicals! Band members participating in marching band are required to have sports physicals before the first day of Band Camp, or as soon as last year's physical expires. (The expiration date can be found on your paperwork.) As we did last year, we will have a Nurse Practitioner on site to do physicals. The cost is nominal - just $20! Look for exact dates in the coming newsletters.
-
PayPal accepted! Band fees can now be paid by using PayPal. Don't forget donations! We have a place for that now, too. Visit the HHS Band website at http://www.hillwoodband.com/ to see (and use) them.
Commentary
From Mr. Chester:
Dear Parents,
The Hillwood High School Band is an exciting, active organization. We are proud to have a committed, enthusiastic group of students who are involved in the music making process. These musical ambassadors are a source of pride for our band, school and community.
An equal source of pride is the band's parent support group, the Hillwood Band Boosters. These dedicated parents and friends have given unselfishly of their time and talents to provide enrichment experiences for the students involved in our program.
During the course of the school year, our band parents make a difference. Annual projects help raise needed funds to offset the costs involved in travel, equipment and related educational expenses. Our band parents also help manage uniform maintenance and distribution, assist with transport and set-up of equipment, and serve as chaperons.
Equal to all of these jobs is the important role as an audience member. The loudest statement a parent can make to their child is through attendance at band concerts and performances. Your child may not come right out and say "thanks," but they will certainly appreciate and value your support.
On Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009 at 6:30 PM in the band rehearsal hall at Hillwood, the Hillwood Band Boosters will be meeting to discuss upcoming band events and support activities. The meeting should not last more than an hour. Please try to clear your calendar and attend. By attending and participating in our parent support group, you can stay informed of the activities of the Hillwood High School Band Program.
This is your personal invitation to come out and renew an old friendship or make a new one. Experience first-hand the sense of community that develops as involved parents and friends support the activities of their children. I look forward to seeing you there.
Sincerely,
Michael Chester
Director of Bands,
Hillwood High School
More From Mr. Chester:
Positive Performance Concepts - June 18-19, 2009 at John Overton High School
This clinic is highly recommended! Over 200 band students from across the southeast attend this workshop.
This annual clinic focuses on all aspects of marching band for every member regardless of their experience. Newly appointed section leaders and field conductors will especially benefit from this clinic. Hillwood Band students who have attended in years past have noted all of the wonderful instruction they have received from this clinic and have worked first hand with some of the regions finest adjudicators and clinicians.
The goal of the two day workshop is demonstrating that all members of a band program are equal contributors. Our definition of Leader is ANY student, regardless of age, experience, or ability level, that presents themselves to their peers as a role model. Personal and competitive success is achieved through the understanding and active practice of positive, logical instruction executed with clear, well-defined goals. Band is an all-inclusive term involving the equal partnership of drum major, wind, percussion, and color guard members.
The Positive Performance Concepts Clinic prepares students in all aspects of the band to perform as ideal role models to their peers, leading them to personal and competitive success. PPC also provides instructional, hands-on presentations for band directors in the areas of show development, rehearsal techniques, and general effect methods.
Students of any experience level will benefit from the well-planned and progressive instructional sessions. Participants at PPC will experience the process and techniques needed to mold and shape fellow members into ambitious, enthusiastic achievers for their own band programs.
If your child is interested please click on the link to this website and register. Highly recommended!
